Like Telegram and Signal, WhatsApp is a free instant messaging application available for downloading smartphones and computers. With WhatsApp, it’s possible to send messages and make calls, as well as send and receive multimedia files (photos, videos, documents, voice messages). Most users use the app to make and receive calls and messages without relying on the services of a cell phone carrier and plan.
What about WhatsApp’s safety features? They’re definitely lacking when compared to Signal’s safety features and certainly Telegram’s safety features. First, WhatsApp doesn’t allow for two-way opt-in, and it doesn’t offer users the ability to send temporary texts or images. Sure, both provide end-to-end encryption, but that’s become a standard feature of most messaging apps in the 2020s.
Where WhatsApp fails to shine as a top messaging app is in its third-party sharing. As a Facebook-owned company, WhatsApp shares data with Facebook and other Facebook companies. In their February 2021 privacy update, WhatsApp noted that they receive information via Facebook products regarding your behavior and share your information with Facebook and other associated companies.
