You need a car to do anything or go anywhere

Calgary has great potential but you need a car to do anything, that's why kids start driving at 14. There is a light rail, but it only has two lines, is very expensive, and has stabbings seemingly every day. (30+ minute delays are not uncommon). Noise pollution from all the cars is loud and difficult to get away from. There are fun things to do in the downtown areas, but expect to pay in order to get into any of them. Improvements are currently being made for cycling, (bike lanes exist but are un protected.)

Beautiful, clean and natural, city feels more like you expect a Canadian city should -- in some places. Not enough economic diversity though a lot of ethnic diversity and most people are quite progressive. Walkability and transit get lower marks because of the zoning laws in Calgary, especially anything post 80's so it depends where you live. There is no concept of building up, just building out here. I have never owned a car and have used transit 40+ years. Many neighbourhoods designated single family detached aren't allowed even to have a corner store so, despite wind powered city transit, there's too many cars (which of course everyone blames on the car owner, not the fact that the city is so spread out that if you use transit it can take multiple transfers and an hour or more to get to the shopping center). If moving here, do your research on how far stores etc are. Older areas are more mixed between homes and businesses, but they are fast disappearing, except where the rich live of course.
